Landscape

The landscape of Lombok is dominated by the 3,726 m high Mount Rinjani,
one of the highest Mountains of Indonesia. The Balinese compare
Mount Agung in Bali and Mount Rinjani in Lombok with a husband
and his wife, although the last one is greater. A line of mountains around Mount
Rinjani covers the most inaccessible and sparsely
populated northern regions of Lombok. The farmland, however, lies in the
highlands and the southern, fertile regions. They pull like a
belt from the densely populated West to the East, while the dry coastal lowlands
have a more savanna-like character. The landscape offers opportunities
for cycling and hiking through jungle to the savannah, dominated by rocks,
or simply along the coast. After each bend of the street is a new, surprising
sight.
